About
Welcome to the world of Microgreens!
Microgreens are better known as a baby plant or a seedling. These baby plants contain concentrated nutritional content in their stem and cotyledons (caw-duh-lee-duns) which makes them a super food. Cotyledons are the first leaves to appear from a seed and are sometimes referred to as 'seed leaves'. These leaves are part of the seed and serve as the embryo of the plant. Cotyledons store all the nutrients to feed the plant until the true leaves begin to emerge and photosynthesize.
Microgreens are PACKED full of nutrients, vitamins, and polyphenols*! They are also rich in potassium, iron, zinc, magnesium and copper and provide much needed antioxidants. Though there are not a ton of studies out on microgreens yet, the data available shows that microgreens can have up to 9 times more concentrated nutrition and 40 times more vitamins and antioxidants than that of their full grown counterparts! OMG!!!
I first started growing microgreens for my own health and wellbeing during fall of 2020. Once I started sharing them with family and friends, my 'micro' world became a 'macro' production!
I am currently just a one person operation with a DIY grow room within my home. The plants remain inside to maintain protection from any outside pests (animal and insect). The only 'pests' are my two 'micro' dogs who weigh in at whopping 8 pounds combined! One could say I have always loved small things!
The seeds I use are from True Leaf Market. I use any organic seed I can find in my growing. There are some seeds however, that are just not offered as organic quite yet. Though I am not organically certified, I DO NOT use any pesticides or other unnatural additives. If a seed is prone to seed rot, I will occasionally use a heavily diluted spray of food grade hydrogen peroxide and water at the beginning of seed production. (Typically during summer when the humidity is uncontrollable)
When I am not growing hydroponically in just water, I am using a grow medium that is called Coco Coir which is finely ground coconut husks.
Polyphenols: Naturally occurring plant compound. Research shows polyphenols can help manage blood pressure levels and keep your body vessels healthy and flexible, promoting good circulation. They also help reduce chronic inflammation, another risk factor for heart disease. Polyphenols can reduce and help control your blood sugar levels. They have also been called "lifespan essentials" for their potential to reduce chronic illnesses! (information courtesy of Nourish by www.webmd.com)
